WordPress is known to come with a powerful yet simple user management system where users have capabilities which are based on the specific roles they are assigned to. WordPress comes with the following five default user roles and capabilities:

– Administrator
– Editor
– Author
– Contributor
– Subscriber

You can also see full list of user roles on

All these roles come with predefined capabilities but they can be easily changed with the help of coding or plugins such as Members, Capability Manager Enhanced or User Role Editor. These plugins are great to use for wordpress users, who don’t want to get into coding stuff. But if you think you are in a “pro-developer” mode then few lines of PHP will help you out in this.

Change WordPress User Capabilities with PHP

A wordpress role can be modified through an accessory function in PHP which is called get_role. Following code can allow Editor to remove_users:

function wps_editor_can_remove_users() {
$editor = get_role( 'editor' );
$editor->add_cap( 'remove_users' );

The fetch of an ‘Editor’ Role takes care of the ‘editor’ parameter on the add_cap method. You can make use of this method in your plugins or themes’s function.php. Whatever changes you do are directly stored to the database.

Create New WordPress User Role with PHP

You can use add_role function in PHP to change the capabilities of existing roles. It includes three parameters:

– Role slug-like name – ‘comment_moderator’
– Role display name – ‘Comment Moderator’
– Array of Capabilities for User

Here is example for the code:

register_activation_hook( __FILE__, 'wps_add_roles_on_activation' );
function wps_add_roles_on_activation() {
__('Commment Moderator', 'plugin-slug'),
'read' => true,
'edit_posts' => true,
'edit_other_posts' => true,
'edit_published_posts' => true,
'moderate_comments' => true

Remember that roles must only be created when your plugin is activated because these new roles are stored in the database and are anytime reloaded by WordPress. Don’t worry, as nothing will be broken if you have them hooked in the init action.

Change Specific User Capabilities

Sometimes, there is a need to give few or more powers to a specific user. Methods of add_cap and remove_cap can be used to change a specific user’s capabilities in WordPress. Here is an example for this:

add_action( 'init', 'wps_david_cant_edit' );
function wps_david_cant_edit() {
$user_id = 7; // The ID of the user
$user = new WP_User( $user_id );
$user->remove_cap( 'edit_posts' );

Once the role’s general capabilities have been loaded, this is a specific override on a specific user.

WordPress comes with pre defined set of user roles and capabilities that determines what a user can do on the website. Playing with the User roles and capabilities is just another area that one can explore.

While WordPress is really easy to use, there are common WordPress errors that can make you panic or smash your desk in frustration. Good news is that the error you are seeing on your site had most likely been reported and resolved by someone before you. So that annoying error should not cause you to fall out of love with WordPress. Here are some common WordPress errors and how you can fix them.

1. Internal Server Common WordPress Errors

In case you have received a 500 internal server error, your site might be suffering from one of the many WordPress errors. Just exercise some patience and be prepared for some serious troubleshooting.

Plugins or Theme

If you can access the dashboard, then click on “Plugins” and disable the one you installed recently. If this doesn’t help then select all the plugins using the topmost tick box and choose ‘Deactivate’ to deactivate all the plugins on your site.

If you don’t have access to the dashboard, then you can test the plugins via FTP. Navigate to the relevant directory and then open up ‘wp-content/plugins.’ This contains all the plugins you’ve installed. Rename this folder slightly to test whether the problem is from the plugins. You can as well test individual plugins by renaming their corresponding folders. If the plugins are not the cause of the problem, you can reinstall all of them by simply changing the name of the folder back to the way it was originally. If you have found the plugin which is at fault, there could be one of many reasons. So it is best to simply remove it and to find another plugin that achieves a similar result.

If your plugins are not at fault, then the problem could be with your theme. Start by backing up your theme folder then deleting your theme. WordPress will install a default theme. A problem with your theme could be resulting from some poor coding; so look at your theme’s functions.php file to find out if this is where the problem is. You may be forced to contact the theme’s author if you can’t do this on your own.

PHP Debugging

If the solutions above do not help then you can enable PHP debugging. Only follow these steps, if you are confident with your coding skills.

Open wp-config.php, then search for this line:

define('WP_DEBUG', false);

Add ‘//’ at the beginning of this line, so that it’s commented out.

//define('WP_DEBUG', false);

Now, copy and paste this code below the above line:

define('WP_DEBUG', true);
define('WP_DEBUG_LOG', true);
define('WP_DEBUG_DISPLAY', false);

With the help of this, errors will be sent to a file naming error.log which is available in wp-content folder. In order to make changes, make sure the permission is set to 666 for this file.

Bad .htaccess

It’s time for you to check if your .htaccess file has corrupted. Rename the file by adding “temp” or something similar on the end.

Enable “view hidden files” in order to look for .htaccess file in your FTP server. Now, login to your wp-admin and go to “Settings > Permalinks” and reset your permalinks. By doing this, a new version has been created for the working file. Check if the common wordpress errors have been solved.

2. The White Screen Of Death

This error is most likely as a result of one of three things:

  • A Theme
  • A Plugin
  • Exhausted Memory

For a theme or plugin issue, refer to the previous section. The methodology of troubleshooting is exactly the same.

Exhausted Memory

This error occurs when you’ve reached the memory limit. Increase the memory by accessing the wp-config.php file. Within the main PHP tag you will add the code

define ('WP_MEMORY_LIMIT', '64M');

this will increase your memory limit to 64M which is always a safe amount.

3. Database Connection Common WordPress Errors

This is commonly a server error, but it might result from other reasons. It could be that you’ve simply changed your database login details and this may require you to repair the database.

WP-Config file

The error may result if you change your database password or root password. If that’s the case, then you’ll also have to change this in the wp-config.php file.

So jump into your wp-config.php file and make sure the information is correct.

define('DB_NAME', 'database-name');
define('DB_USER', 'database-username');
define('DB_PASSWORD', 'database-password');
define('DB_HOST', 'localhost');

It’s important to verify what your DB host value is, so that the final line is correct. In the majority of cases it will be localhost, but do some research just in case. If you’re running WordPress on a local server then replacing localhost with the IP address might fix the problem.

If you are seeing different error messages on front end and back end of your website, then you should add the following to your wp-config.php file:

define('WP_ALLOW_REPAIR', true);

After this, visit this url:, you will see an option is displayed to repair the database. Once you do the repairing, make sure to remove the above code from wp-config.php

As you can see, common WordPress errors have a way of fixing them. All that you need to do is either to do a little research to find out how to fix the error on your own or to find an expert who can help you fix the error.

What makes WordPress popular is the fact that it is an open-source blogging or CMS platform that is scalable and affordable to all. Many people develop their websites on this platform because it has various compatible themes, like Responsive WordPress Theme, and plugins for improved functionality.

Whether your business is small or big, you can create and use a WordPress website to reach more potential customers, boost your productivity, and thus realize increased ROI (return on investments). However, it is important for your website to run on both desktop and mobile platforms.

This ensures that your potential customers can reach you from almost any device they use to access the internet. With more users moving away from using just their PCs to access the internet, the need for responsive WordPress themes that are well-coded is on the rise.

You can develop a highly responsive wordpress theme for your business site. Although creating a mobile-friendly theme is not easy, this guide should help you come up with a perfectly responsive layout of your WP theme.

Prepare and Plan

First, you need to know the design differences between responsive web design and static WP themes. With an idea in mind, you can easily craft a practical and impeccable theme layout that can run on various device screens smoothly. Know your target market or user groups, and determine how you want your theme to be and what you want with it.

Get to understand the requirements and needs of your users so that you can add the useful aspects of that to your theme layout. With the list of your theme’s design features, you need to sketch its layout roughly. Do this for different devices with different screen sizes.

Note that your sketch layout widths are just rough representations of existing PCs, tablets, smartphones and other devices available in the market. Your design should have the ability to adjust across these devices when accessed by users. You can also add different layout options, such as multiple widgets areas, header options and sidebar options, into your design.

The Sketching Tools You Need for Your Responsive WordPress Theme

A perfect sketching tool would allow you to work on your concept design fast and efficiently. Although you can sketch on a piece of paper or notebook using a pencil, your iPad can also come handy. You can use applications like the Bamboo Paper, or Paper, with your iPad to make sketches using a stylus.

You get to save so much effort and time in the later development processes by creating a good design concept. An influential theme design concept can allow you to come up with a layout that easily adjusts to the different screen sizes.

Know and Find Solutions to the Challenges that are Specific to Themes

Choose responsive layout options, navigation menus, and malleable widget areas.

Work with Reference Points

Executing your designs help you find out your theme’s feel and visual appearance. It is also during the design process that you must find the solutions to the challenges listed above. The nature of your project and whether you need a developer or not, determine your site’s design needs for further development.

You must display your site in layout versions of a smartphone, desktop, and even tablet. Don’t worry about design factors like button styles, size of font, and white space because they are determined by your users’ browsers. Note that these design factors are assessed by browsers differently.

Develop a Design for Devices Using the Touch Technology

You need to ensure that the buttons and form input fields on your Responsive WordPress Theme are of the right sizes. You can apply white space and font sizes intentionally so that users can easily navigate your site. Remember to work closely with a developer while designing and developing your theme so you can take advantage of his/her knowledge.

Theme Development Process

You can either use a blank theme or starter like Toolbox to code your responsive WordPress Theme, or do the coding from scratch. Opt for starter themes as they come with the framework you can work on, like Bootstrap WP. You can consider Twitter’s Bootstrap, or ZURB’s Foundation.

You can start with smaller layouts for smaller screens like smartphones, before you move on to design and develop layouts for PC and tablet screens.

Do Not Use Images

For your Responsive WordPress Theme, consider using icon fonts or CSS base64 to speed up your site’s performance as most responsive layouts of themes barely display images. This means that your site can load fast even on mobile devices experiencing slow connections. Moreover, devices like the Macbook Pro and iPad feature high pixel density.

Support Old Browser Media Queries

Your WP theme needs to be designed to support media queries through old browsers like Internet Explorer 7 and 8. Use Respond.js, a JavaScript solution, to design your smartphone layout for compatibility.

Test Your Responsive WordPress Theme

You need to test your theme to find out if all the features are working. Any feature that does not work must be fixed instantly. Use various testing tools for screen resolutions to determine if your theme is accessible across different devices.

You can also request your friends, family or colleagues to try accessing your theme from their different devices to find out if your project is successful or something needed adjustment.

With a Responsive WordPress Theme, your website becomes compatible with various devices, ranging from mobile to laptops and iPads. This ensures that you can reach more people in your target market.

The birth of tablets and smartphones led to the evolution of websites, churning out what is now known as responsive web design or RWD. This term was coined by author Ethan Marcotte in his book Responsive Web Design. Unlike before, when web designers only had to consider the specs of desktop computers and laptops in creating a site. They now have to factor in the specs of various tablets and smartphones available in the market and that is something very tricky, indeed.

Simply put, responsive web design is one that adapts to the device — retaining the page or site’s core look, feel, and formula while fluidly conforming to the particulars of a certain gadget. For example, how YouTube is presented on a PC should look similar when viewed on an iPad, an iPhone, an Android phone, and various tablets and hand-held gadgets.

When creating a RWD, one has to consider these factors:

The framing or screen. Not just how big it is, but also the resolution and the orientation — how will the design translate to a landscape or portrait format?

You also have to add to the equation whether the device uses a keyboard and a mouse, or whether it’s a touch screen. Obviously, web developers nowadays have to make sure that the design is both mouse and finger-friendly, with features and content that can respond with a mere scroll, click, or swipe.

The scaling of images is also important. For those with small screens such as the iPhone, it invariably has to have an option of making images bigger, ready for their close-up. But, more importantly, whether one is expanding or shrinking the page or image, the proportions must be the same; otherwise, the look is distorted.

Granted, responsive web design may be a pain in the neck to begin with, especially for newbie designers and developers, but the beauty of RWD is that, once everything is in place, the design is easily translatable across all sorts of devices, and users are pleased. And don’t worry about not having the means (read: funds) to hire an awesome web developer who can redesign your site to RWD; blog software and online publishing systems such as WordPress and Google’s Blogger have come up with templates — all you need to do is fill in the blanks and customize it accordingly, as they have hundreds of themes and designs to choose from. Blogger has even come up with a mobile app so users can post entries from their smartphones and tablets.

There are also host of DIY responsive web designs that simplifies the process, one of which is Webflow, which offers RWDs for non-techies at very affordable prices. Think of them as the idiot’s guide to RWD — no need to key in media query codes and the like.

Since the inception of Responsive web Design is fairly recent, do expect that changes and improvements will come, and at a rapid pace at that, given the advances in technology. Still, don’t let this fact frustrate you. It’s practically a guarantee that DIY RWD publishers will crop up, ensuring that even illiterate online publishers can launch their own sites someday — as evidenced by online publishing forebears Blogger, WordPress, and the like.

Internet is flooded with Free WordPress Themes, but there are very few we can choose for an eye catching website. Choosing a right theme is the most important decision you have to make as a bad theme may confuse the audience and can harm your SEO.

At Y Design Services, we always try to provide valuable information to our readers and that is why we want to explore this topic in more depth. We hope you find this post useful. So, let’s have a look at what you must expect from a good Free WordPress Theme.

Choose a Reliable Source

Plenty of WordPress themes are available online, but choosing a right provider is a little tricky. It is true that many WP theme providers offer themes that may contain malicious malware-type code included inside.

However, there are ways to test a free theme for this, but honestly that is more trouble than it’s worth in many cases. The easier solution is to build up a list of reputable WordPress theme providers that have been in business for a long time (not a site that just sprung up last week!) to source your latest theme download.

It is suggested to choose reputable sites like,, and to buy both free and premium themes. These are trusted sources and ensure easy installation that does more than you expect.

Premium WordPress Theme Providers

It is always suggested that one should choose Free WordPress Themes which have a premium version as well. In this way, you cannot only unlock few premium features that you like, but it also ensures the reputation of theme provider.

Such theme providers are professional and you can purchase the premium theme if you like the other features of it. There could be hidden motives of developers who create only free WP themes. Therefore, make sure to choose providers with a separate version of premium theme.

It is essential to choose the latest theme for your website (theme which is 5 to 6 months old) so that you can ensure the responsiveness of the theme. Older free themes that were made three+ years ago often didn’t include responsive features (it’s only become popular in the last 2 – 3 years) and likely haven’t been updated since as the original developer has moved on to other things since then.

The best free themes include one or more graphical slider. This allows you to add your own images, some captions, and set animation effects. It also reduces the clutter on your home page and thus makes it more appealing. Users can feel more control and great interactivity with slider like features.

Thoughtful Widgets & Plugins

The usual widgets and plugins like a Related Posts or a Recent Posts widget may be included with a free theme. Occasionally, a developer who has access to a developer license for a particular premium plugin or widget may include this extra too.

It is great to utilize one or two premium feature of the theme into your free theme in order to increase its effectiveness.

Y Design Services have been offering WordPress themes from the last 6 – 7 years to its clients. We also offer Free WordPress Themes every month so that the whole community can take advantage of this.

WordPress is an incredibly efficient and good looking platform for your site, for these reasons being used by very many people out there. If you choose WordPress to start your own site, you made an excellent choice. Still, there is one aspect that bothers most users, and that is the loading speed of WordPress site. WordPress is excellent to use and affordable, but it is far from being perfect. But, if you think speed is something you cannot improve, think again, because there are methods for making this better. Yes, it is not a secret, and anyone can bring improvements to this chapter, without the need of being a rocket scientist.

When we have to tackle a problem, we have to look at its roots to find the cause that triggered the problem, and not at its outer layer. There is a statement saying that a fish will always start to stink out from its head. So, you need to have a smart approach to making your site work faster, for the enjoyment of your visitors. Here is a step-by-step strategy to achieve that:

Analyze the Core

Everything in this world has a core, including websites. So if you need to improve loading speed of WordPress site, it is obvious that this is the best place to start. The performance and speed will be dictated by the way the core is structured and functions. So how can you solve the core of a slow working site? You need to optimize its content. Start by getting a reliable DNS, work through a hosting that is specially designed for WordPress, a clean and clear theme, and a list of plugins without any excesses.

Check out your current DNS

Sounds too complicated? Well, it is not like this in reality. Actually, you don’t need to know too much about DNSs. But one thing is necessary for every WordPress site owner to know, and that is that without a properly working DNS, your site won’t appear in the browser. So it is useless to make everything else work if your DNS is not doing its job. You can check out its performances by running a test, the Pingdom test, to see its speed. A fast loading DNS should take place in a matter of seconds, if not, at least, you will know where the problem is.

Be careful about your Hosting

Do you think that a general purpose hosting will suffice for your WordPress site? Think again, because hosting made especially to fit WordPress was not developed without a purpose. An unsuited hosting will mean a low performance and speed of your site, so get the right hosting for your site and the adequate caching.

Keep the WordPress Themes and Plugins clean

Even if you solved the caching issues and you got a more efficient one for your WordPress site, it won’t be able to tackle a theme that has too much on it. So opting for a clean theme will come to your advantage. The same rule should be applied when it comes to plugins as well. It is true that a WordPress site can handle a lot of plugins, more precisely above 40, but only if they are chosen correctly. One single wrong plugin in the entire group is enough to spoil the speed of your site. So try to keep the folders dedicated to plugins as clean as possible so that loading speed of WordPress site is not affected.

Now you have the recipe of how to have a much faster WordPress Site!

As you can see, it is not impossible, not hard to achieve. Take each aspect and break it down into smaller steps and get on it. It may be easy to set up a site this way, but all these details will make the difference between a well-set site and just another site that is trying to occupy some space on the Internet. If you want to offer top-quality services to your customers, a site that loads fast and looks pristine is your secret for success.

We all love speed, I am sure, each one of you does. May it be racing cars or speedy downloading. In today’s technological era, being so busy the entire day in our work, nobody has time to browse through a website. But, when we decide to do, we would not expect the site to be slow in loading the web pages. The Website Speed plays a vital role in judging whether the site is good or bad. None of you would want to wait for 10 -12 seconds for the page to get loaded. It is the need of the hour and hence, a lot of organisations are working at par, to design a plethora of new ways to help improve the website speed. All this is because there is a lot of criteria in making a site rank high, and amongst all the criterion, speed takes its way to the top. Website Designing is an important procedure, but at the same time keeping the ways to improve the speed of the site is also essential.

Just to be more specific in what I am trying to explain, would take a fact in the picture. As per Google Webmaster’s, a website should be ranked higher only if it takes half a second to load its web pages. Web Designers and Developers are striving hard to design a lot of new and incredible ways to help a website to improve the speed and get fast in loading the pages, hence proving the authenticity of the fact mentioned above. All of us would agree that the most frustrating thing in the world is browsing through a slow website. Web Design is easy but at the same time, it is also important to adhere to certain steps and instructions to make the website superfast.

The speed of your site concerns for two reasons:

– Search Engine Optimization

– The User’s Experience

Here are five practical ways to make the website speed incredibly faster keeping the Google Speed criteria in mind:

1. Perk Up the Hosting Plan: This happens to be the simplest way to increase the speed of any site. Hence, it is always important and an incredible decision of improving and upgrading your website Hosting Plan.

2. Understanding HTTP Requests: Sites are ordinarily sluggish in view that of too many (or too large) HTTP requests. While you understand HTTP requests, you can better do away with them. “Every time your internet browser fetches a file (a web page, a photograph, and many others) from an online server, it does so making use of HTTP – that’s “Hypertext Transfer Protocol”. HTTP is a request/response protocol, which means your computer sends a request for some file (e.g. Get me the file ‘dwelling.Html’), and the online server sends a response again (“here’s the file”, followed with the aid of the file itself).”

3. Delicate usage of Plugins: Plugin bloat can drastically sluggish your website online efficiency by growing too many additional documents, for that reason growing load time. Try to avoid the usage of plugins each time possible. For my part, it’s no longer viable to avert plugins. But there are approaches which could help you diminish the total rely on.

4. Caching can be an advantage: There is a tendency of web pages storing more static files, that allows visitors to get access to those pages rapidly, and since the database does not tend to get back each file every-time on a request, that is called Page Caching. For those who’re WordPress users, may install a plugin to permit caching. Listed below are some general caching plugins:

W3 whole Cache: most common performance plugin.

WP tremendous Cache: recommended for prime visitor sites with under powered servers, appearing to be up to date most traditionally.

5. Usage of The Internet-Friendly Images: Site size most often, and snapshot sizes exceptionally, make a massive difference to your site speed. The larger your content/pix, the slower the web page. Some standard methods to counteract this is by way of shrinking the file sizes of snapshots to your website online, decreasing the quantity of graphics you utilize or casting off them altogether. However, having no snapshots to your site online is annoying!

Rather than getting rid of them, optimize photographs earlier than importing them to your website online with the aid of:

Altering the decision: decreasing the “first-class” of the picture (and the file size).

Compressing the images: increasing the efficiency of photography knowledge storage.

Cropping the picture: when cropping, you are chopping out unneeded areas and hence making the image smaller in dimension.

In a nutshell, the above mentioned were 5 of the top-notch ways of improving the speed of the internet site while designing itself. It’s always a right decision of choosing a new way to improve the site speed.

Everyone hates slow websites, and if you’ve got one, it will slaughter your income (I hope it haven’t begun to happen already). Google, as we all know, is also obsessed with cutting down load-time speed, since this feature has become an integral part of its ranking system. An optimized website improves user experience (UX) and also transitions well in between various SEO strategies. The aim is to gain massive popularity and profitability for your respective domain.

Best Optimization Plugins for WordPress

This module can improve the images up to 70% which will spare many bandwidths for you and make your website more speedy. As you transfer the images to your website, the module sends those to the Optimus server at the same time and send you the optimized version.

This module won’t just improve the files you upload but create multiple sized images that WordPress usually makes for such media files (i.e. thumbnail, small, medium, and large).

Imsanity WordPress Plugin

Imsanity is another great plugin. Imsanity automatically resizes large image transfers down to a size that is more sensible for display in the browser. It is still more than sufficient for typical website use. One of the best features of Imsanity is the ability to set a maximum width, height, and quality.

At the point when a contributor uploads a picture that is bigger than the configured size, Imsanity will automatically scale it down to the arranged size and replace the original image.

BJ Lazy Load

BJ Lazy Load is another extraordinary module. This module makes your website load faster and also spare bandwidth. BJ Lazy Load permits you to lazy load for all your post thumbnails, post images, gravatar images and content iframes with a placeholder and loads the content as it gets close to entering the browser window when the guest look over the page. Additionally, works with text widgets.

Also, you can lazy load different images and iframes in your theme, by using a simple filter.
